MAME videos

The new MAME title videos are complete. They are located on the FTP here: /-GameEx-/- Emulator Artwork & Videos -/MAME/video_title

95% of them are a decent attract mode capture.

The upscaled videos on the FTP are however the best quality. In the next release of GameEx there will be an option to chose between the three types to automatically download.

Audio can be a slight issue on the title videos because they are all fixed to 60hz.

The title videos are up to date as of MAME 0.287 and include all working or imperfect non clones unless the name of the clone game is different.

60 fps MAME attract mode title videos

10 years ago I created a 60 fps MAME attract mode title video set.

I decided to revisit this project last week with the latest MAME sets, MAME version and ffmpeg.

I also fixed up and updated the code to run at 64 bit and .net framework 4.8 (it was on 2).

When I initially did this 10 years ago, I used a custom build of MAME with code changes to run at 60 hz. Now with the latest MAME no code changes other than nag removal but using syncrefresh.

I also improved the encoding and the files are now smaller.

The videos are now processing on a couple of machines and should be complete in two-three weeks. There are over a 1400 complete already.</p.

They are located here on the public free FTP server:

-GameEx-/- Emulator Artwork & Videos -/MAME/video_titles_60fps_2026

There are samples on my YouTube Channel.here.
Enjoy.

GameEx Online performance and AI

I have been heavily working on GameEx cross platform and have setup and configuration working via the GameEx Online web app. Its tricky building this into GameEx itself across all versions due to GUI elements, paricularly text boxes although I realise some will have privacy concerns. It took a few seconds to click through each page and performance seemed like a big problem that I had not addressed before. I ran the page through ChatGPT Pro and asked it to improve performance with a single prompt. The result just worked and provided a 1000% improvement. As you can imagine I was very impressed by this. On top of this I removed dead code myself to produce a much smaller binary. It is not a heavily hit site but performance is perfect now.

GameEx cross platform 19.79

Some nice progress with GameEx cross platform.

Mame launching and list updates are working on both Linux and Mac, supporting both system wide and local MAME folder installs.

Setup and configuration is now working.

Finally, performance on Android has been greatly improved. It renders at a lower resolution and then upscales.

GameEx 19.77

I was using some software by Preemptive solutions on a scheme for small software houses as part of the build process for GameEx and PinballX.

They have been significantly raising the price every year and this year they raised it by another $1000.

So I spent the last 24 hours migrating over to another solution which fortunately is now as good or better at an 8th of the price. This release uses the new build tools and I say adios to Preemptive. Thanks for wearing a condom.

The new product does some nice optimisations to the code. I notice performance improvements.

New GPU accelarated video renderer.

Nvidia removed VMR 9 support and this release adds a new video renderer fallback using media Foundation and shared textures with DirectX 11 which is GPU accelerated.

Upgraded to .net 10 runtime and the .net desktop runtime version 10 is included iin the installer rather than 8. it is still compiled as version 6 but set to run under 10. Compatibility with older operating systems back to XP remains intact.

Fixed up Karaoke support and .cdg and .kar files are supported again, although take a while to load.

If you experience any new issues with video playback or old basic GPU's please report on the forums. The new renderer required significant changes including moving to DirectX 9ex from plain 9. Thankis Nvidia!

GameEx 19.66

I spent about 20 hours trying to implement another video playback solution without lots of work because NVidia recently broke VMR 9 support. I thought I found another solution via ChatGPT which was the first time I tried it. It looked amazing but it gave me absolute horseshit over and over. How AI is replacing coders seems hard to believe. It seemed hopeless when experienced people need help. I tried Direct9Ex with DXVA2 and media foundation which it completely lied about. I also tried the same but not hardware accelerated which was valid but It did not work because the current Microsoft codecs dont support RGB output.

Although also legacy DirectX9Ex with FlipEx seemed like a good move on its own and I have it working well, then had problems recreating the device which is a big issue for a front end. I have this code done if I find a solution. Maybe waiting for DWM to be ready or somehow resetting it could be a solution.

FFMpeg may be a way to go for video playback and should perform accept it did involve a memory copy well, and I may try that but probably no better than what I have

Of note both AMD and Intel previously removed or broke VMR 9 support but then put it back. Which is why there was already a fallback in place

PinballX and GameEx do have the option to switch to a more legacy video solution and normally this is automatically detected. However, Nvidia neglected to tell the operating system they removed VMR 9 support so the automatic fallback was not working. Maybe they are using AI coding too!

Also of note when questioning the Brave search AI if there were issues with the solutions ChatGPT it gave the correct response.

I can recommend the Brave AI.

With these two new versions of GameEx and PinballX I check for Nvidia driver versions, so it is now again automatic as it was with intel and AMD.

GameEx Cross Platform

I have just uploaded the latest progress on GameEx cross platform.
I am now using Unity 6 and all or most performance issues have been addressed.
GameEx 18.90

GameEx and GameEx Arcade Edition have been combined into a single installer and should cover every Windows operating system since and including XP. I spent a lot of time optimizing and cleaning up the installer as well as testing on many operating systems and platforms. They both share the same files and config but the Setup Wizard will show the appropriate options for both versions.

Main thing to note when upgrading for the first time is the install will use the install folder for GameEx not Arcade Edition.

It seems like a simple nice and obvious improvement but all this required a lot of work and testing.

It does mean one installer build and upload for me too which helps.

There are also a few bug fixes and optimizations.

GameEx Multiplatform (Unity) Alpha

This is something I started in 2020. I have not made much progress until recently but now have the Windows x64 version nearly completed.

It originally started as a separate project but now it uses the same code base.

Please consider an alpha version at this point just for feedback and testing. If you are new here please use the other GameEx installs.

The benefits of the multiplatform version:
- Few or no external dependencies. Just Unity/Mono.
- Eventually versions for other platforms such as Linux and Android.
- Setup will be web based leveraging GameEx online,
- Everything uses the same code base. All versions get updates.

Downsides:
- There is video support but no MKV support just yet.
- Will be missing some features but both Arcade and regular GameEx will be supported.

	Instructions:

	Windows:
Extract to a location with write access. Then run one of three executables.

GameEx 18.55

Looking to remove any possible video or input lag GameEx will now lower its process prioirty to idle after launching an emulator.

Fixes to the sync refresh MAME display feature. I revisited all this and looked at GroovyMAME usage on an LCD. It will work with GroovyMAME but on a 5 year old mini PC I reverted to vanilla MAME in my new Chewlix build, I incestigated all this again and other than going with a Mister, your best bet in 2024 is to go for a G Sync monitor for MAME for no tearing and input lag on an flat panel.

In MAME attract mode the bezel will try to show the logo first if available rather than marquee. Looks mich nicer.

GameEx 18.38

In attempt to provide full configuration and access via GameEx Online with the web Setup Wizard for current and future projects the site now allows local directory and file browsing for remote paths. This will be also good for upcoming projects not on windows platforms. I learnt a little about jquery doing this for the popup browser on the site. This change requires an update to the client to work. I also moved back to .net 6 from .net 7. .net 7 actually seemed to perform worse and excluded older windows os versions such as 7. I've also spent some time optimizing gameex.com and pinballx.com on Google page speed insights. So hopefully the sites should perform a little better for you on mobile devices. Note the remote browsing is a little slow as its client server.

Thank you.

I decided to go purely donation based a couple of months back. This was mainly due to overwhelming competition which alone I cannot keep up with. The competition is vast ranging from one commercial windows front end to many free RetroPie and Android solutions. I saw the writing on the wall post lockdown and trying to oprerate commercially in this field is a dying business. I believe there will be no succesful commercial front ends of any viabillity in two - three years time. Having said that I feel many still enjoy GameEx and PinballX, and download services and wish me to continue. I also enjoy it very much. Unfortunaly PayPal ditched me the other week. I can only assume they did not like the lose association I have with games and roms. They have the right as a business to serve who they like and from what I read, they do this frequently. Although I provide no illegal content here or anywhere and I pay my taxes.

I have new payment gateway options now and I ask if you enjoy my products and wish to support me you please switch your renewals over. My costs are not insignificant and I do not want to have to provide a lesser service. Thank you so much, Tom.
